The Dutch build cycle paths right on their junctions. So they must have wider streets, right? Wrong! This video shows how it is done, no extra space needed.
About Lisa
Lisa Black started riding bikes again in 2010 after a 15 year hiatus. She’s still getting the hang of it and rides mainly along the waterfront and (carefully) through the city. Lisa has a new appreciation of shortcuts and alleyways, and rides a mixte frame because she can do it in a frock.

It would be AMAZING to see this kind of infrastructure in NZ.
Unfortunately, a lot of the changes you see above can only happen when the priority of road use shifts, preferably by law.
Then there is the big cyclist & driver behavior issue.
Now if those two things can happen parallel to the implementation of the above the cycling infrastructure, then we could see some viable solutions here.
So without the comprehensive approach, we are basically looking at lots of angry driver and cyclist road-kills…

The crossing design at 0:10 is like the bottom of Ngauranga where south-traveling bikes must cross over vehicles coming from the Hutt.
